I decided, for a few sketches, to start myself off with a concept, and work from that. For this, i said "Okay I want a theif.." and drew it. I'm really happy with how it came out too. He looks like a sly theif wouldn't you say? A funny thing about him, which wasn't intensional, is on the Fox gallery, page 7.. Where Fox is slashing a theif, it LOOKS kinda like this guy, but it wasn't supposed to be. Just a funny little thing someone pointed out to me.
This is a healer type person I drew, much like everything else, for the hell of it. Again, I decided to just say to myself "make a healer" and made one! It turned out kinda oriental, but thats cool. I just want stuff I dont usally draw.
This guy is totally different from my norm. I didnt exactly have a concept before drawing him, but it turned out looking like an undercover cop. So thats what I went with!
Maybe the undercover cop would be going after this guy.. but I dont think he'd stand much of a chance. This, is my first black character, ever. No I'm not racist! I just, for some reason.. never considered drawing one. Couldn't quite explain it myself, but now I've broken that restriction. And if you can't tell, this is just supposed to be some thug.
A start of a new way to try charcters for me. For this, I wrote the name at the top of the page, then drew a character that I thought, would match the name. I was originally going for some westernish outlaw type guy, but It didn't exactly come across that way. If I added a hat and coat I bet it would, but I didn't want it to be the typical type. The only thing I don't like, is his guns, and thats because I didn't research one for him so I really had no idea what I was doing. The top right, was ment to be for a close up on the gun.. I just never got around to it.. maybe later..
Another character based on name first- character later. This one's name is Kit Magrin. When I looked at that name, I said to myself.. "Self.. you should make this kid more modern, since you have very very few of those characters." So thats what I set out to do. And I think I did a reasonably good job. The style of those pants is something i've never tried before. So I was happy with how most of this came out. And I had intended to make it a model sheet type deal, like Ryan's above, but I just never got around to making other poses.
This is a demon character I made up for the Comic, and just for a strip where the tavern is wrecked. I only made half the wing because I'd mirror it over IF I was going to continue it. But this was just a concept sketch.
Sadly, the demon didn't turn out nearly as awesome in the actual comic.
I made this guy after reading an article about what makes good character design. The biggest thing they talked about, was breaking up symmetry and having instantly recognizable things to set that character apart from the rest. So for this guy, I went with a tribal type logo and a ripped off sleve. I was really happy with this design, though he never turned out to be anything past this.
I liked it so much, I DID try using him as an RP character- ala what I did with Red. But it didn't work out. I wanted a theif and, that design didn't feel very theif-life. So I started just going nuts with it. Trying completely diffetrent directions on each sketch.
1. The tribal guy again, changed a bit.
2. More of like, a traveling monk type theif.
3. Futuristic. That device on his arm helps with the jobs.
4. More traditional style. But definitely a dirty and earthy guy.
Then.. taking pieces from all those guys, I set out to make something I liked. And the result, I have to say, thrills me. I've shown this drawing to many people and they all conclude he's a theif. Not only that, they get his personality. Outgoing, cocky, but with experience to back it up. Thats quite a bit to gather from one drawing. Unfortunately, he was never really used. the RP I made him for, died rather instantly.
Maybe some day I'll find a use for this guy again.
