For one of my classes called "Perspective Drawing", we had to make a composition of 16 or something Boxes, in 20 different ways. It was pretty hard, to think of new ways to take boxes and throw them around.. But a good exercize anyway. it helps you think creatively.
Finally able to scan a bunch of old pictures that I never had the chance to put up here, up they go! A bunch are from the early days at AIP, and the rest are all the way back from High School. but the ones from HS, are still pretty decent.
After doing that, we had to pick one that we liked best, and make a full sized version of it. I went with the boats because i felt it was the most creative. I mean, would you expect to get waring boats.. out of boxes?
For a different Class, Color and desgin, be had to take two letters and make a compostion with them using Negative space. Negative space is usually white space, but it can also be black if thats more dominant. I love how a few of these came out, especially the first one. I really like the use of negative space on that. Because you get X and Y, but only from shapes. Not the actual letter itself.
The same class, and second part to the project. We now had to take the letters we picked, and make emotional pieces with them. What i mean is.. try to make one with just Lines (Top Left), then Sad (bottom left), Happy (top right), Combining all 3 (bottom right) , and finally, texture( far right). This was very hard to say the least. But interestingly enough, people persive horizontal lines as sad, and vertical as happy. The vertical lines appear to have more energy. Strange eh? Texture is simple enough, and boy do i like how that turned out.
For my Animal Anatomy Class. Humans are animals, remember! This is actually my hand, and it's pretty close to it. I have a very boney hand (and overall build). When i flex it and tense it up, you can see all the bones and a bunch of veins too. It's kinda creepy.. but cool for drawing ^_^
This was for my first life drawing class. It's the second scratchboard i ever did. The first being Omnicent Night. It turned out really well, but that white window behind her was a serious bitch. Because i had to scratch away ALL the black, to get it that white. ugh..
Back to perspective drawing. Pretty basic. Just a still life of some stuff i had. The coloring job sucks because i only spent about an hour on that.. heheh.. I forgot my pencils at home.. and had to actually RUN back to the apt (half hour walk). And then run back.. it was not fun.
Rewind back to high school. This was quite a project.. which turned into a huge failure. What it was meant to be, was something called "Cloisonee" And what this s, basically.. is taking thin strips of metal, using them as outline barriers for sand that is pured in, and then melting the whole thing, so the sand turns to glass. So you basically get a glass pendant. This is an extremely long, and extremely hard process. You have to use tweezers tp bend the TINY strips of metal into form. and they have to be standing up straight, and can't tip or or bend on themself. Then you pur the sand on, and bake. You repeat the sand process over and over to get many different colors and shades to it. I actually had it down so that each cale was giving off varried shades of blue. It was pretty kick ass.. until on the LAST day, someone set the kiln too high, and it melted the entire thing. I was pretty crushed, ALMOST lost it and cries in class. but now i can only look back.. and remember what it was..
So anyway, what we have here, is this:
Top Left: Fox by himself. No background
Top middle: The full piece, and what it REALLYlooked like before it melted. Seriously.
Top: Right: MEEEEEEELTED!!!!!
The rest: background Concept ideas
Rewind back even farther! Still HS, but a year previously. This was meant for a book cover. i don't remember the name of the book, or even what it was about. but i remember that the scene i picked was this boxer guy getting praised by the city finally.. so there ya go. That crowd was pretty hard, and i snuck myself in there.. hehe, see if you can spot it ^_-
This was for another high school class. Here, we had to take our initials and make them in the ways it says underneeth each picture. At the time, this was a challenging thing for me. Now it would be easy. By the way, for the bubble one, it says NHJ only because that works better, compositionally.
Another creative exercize project. For this, we had to take 3 objects in the room, and combine them somehow. That candle was actually a plastic candle. But that won't stop it from melting the sharpener! now will it?
Even farther back, to sophmore year HS. This was something where we had to take an existing picture, and do something to it to make it totally different. Like satire. So for this, it's a different spin on the CD cover form No Doubt: Tragic Kingdom.
One of the best drawings I have ever done, was done back in High School, senior year. This took about 3 months, and was the first real drawing I ever did that had to have a "meaning" behind it. So the meaning is that life looks better in color, than black and white. I called this "Coloring Life". This was also, one of the first drawings I made completely from my imagination. I did not look at a SINGLE thing to make this. Originally I was, for reference.. but then I decided to try doing it all from my mind. The only thing I don't like, is the trees. But they're so small, you barely notice.
This is also actually about 32 x 24 or something crazy like that. So it was a huge venture.
It's nice to say though, It was all completely wirth it in the end. My mom even got it framed for me! But it's too big to bring on a plane.. so in NY it forever stays..
